Past work

Just a Change was established in response to housing poverty, focusing on renovating homes for individuals in dire need. The organization addresses a spectrum of challenges from homes lacking roofs, windows, or doors to those without hot water and electricity. Each renovation serves as a catalyst for a fresh start, ensuring every individual has a dignified place to call home. The organization has been committed to improving living conditions, recognizing that these efforts directly reduce poverty, enhance public health, and boost energy efficiency across the nation.

Until now, the organization has been operating through three distinct volunteer-based models tailored to diverse communities across Portugal:

  • Turn Up: engages university students and volunteers in urban areas like Lisbon, Porto and Guimarães, committing to 4-hour shifts to renovate homes of individuals facing housing poverty.
  • Camp In: a summer camp initiative where 40 to 50 volunteers convene in rural areas for a 12-day intensive program that enables the simultaneous renovation of 5 to 6 homes.
  • All In:  a one-day social team-building activity for companies and corporate volunteers. Companies provide financial support, ensuring sustainable renovations of institutions benefiting larger vulnerable groups.

These models have been only possible due to the collaboration with multiple sectors:

  • Municipalities and Local Authorities: critical in funding operations, stimulating local economies through employment of local contractors, and providing logistical support such as warehousing and accommodation. They also assist in screening intervention cases.
  • Private Companies: provide financial contributions toward housing and energy poverty initiatives, as well as, in-kind donations of construction materials.
  • NGOs and Institutions: collaborate in identifying and mapping cases of housing poverty, and providing essential post-renovation support to beneficiaries as required.

In 2023, the organization's efforts touched 85 homes and 43 institutions, benefitting 167 individuals directly and over 5,400 beneficiaries in total. This achievement was made possible by 1,117 volunteers and 4,012 corporate volunteers.
