Coopérnico is a Portuguese co-operative founded in 2013 by a group of citizens who wanted to become an active and participatory player in the renewable energy market.

The cooperative's first projects consisted of installing photovoltaic plants on the roofs of social economy institutions, in order to decentralise electricity production in Portugal and promote the energy autonomy of the various entities participating in the partnership model. This production model, which relies on solar energy, is the one mostly used.

Coopérnico's members are constantly looking for new entities to join this citizen-led cooperative movement, such as schools, hospitals or charitable organizations, so that together we can increase renewable energy production.

In 2019, Coopérnico became a provider on the electricity market and currently (2024) has 6600 contracts.

The Coopérnico cooperative is a member of the European Federation of Energy Cooperatives, REScoop.eu, where it actively participates in various working groups, is involved in national and European projects aimed at increasing its knowledge and piloting innovative experiences useful for creating services for its cooperators.

With the support of its members, Coopérnico cooperative has 44 photovoltaic plants in operation throughout Portugal, corresponding to an investment of 2.4 million euros in 2024.
These photovoltaic production projects create environmental, economic and social value, because they use clean energy sources (solar), they are profitable, providing a return on the investment made by the members and, last but not least, because there is direct collaboration with social economy institutions, partners in the projects, where the photovoltaic panels are installed on the roofs.
